India had a legendary 4x4 Off-road vehicle in the 2000s called the Gypsy. It was as light as a carton box, a low maintenance 4X4 transmission mated with a peppy engine. The Jimny is just a legacy version of the Gypsy with a legacy to compete with. Thar is another famous Off road utility vehicle with a legacy it had to keep up to.

Looks

Now there is going to be no debate here, Thar as a surreal road presence compared to the Jimny. The Jimny being less it weight doesn’t cut out a butch look for itself. The Thar on the other hand looks Butch and deadly. Its Tyre width is twice the one of the Jimny so that makes a lot of difference. Now We know we are going to have a lot of modifications and body kits and grills and yada-yada-yada but the Thar Killed it when it comes to looks.

Powertrains

The Jimny only gets the 1.5 NA petrol engine used in the Ertiga, XL6, Ciaz and has been here for a while now. The Thar gets 3 engines:- 1.5 Diesel, 2L Petrol and the mighty 2.2L diesel hailing from the scorpio. Again the Thar is just better in terms of powertrains. But the Jimny is as light as a carton so it works for it as well.

Dynamics

The Thar is a miserable car to drive on the highway , Off road? Better but the highway was really sketchy. It bounces like a spring on the highway and it gave a lot of fatigue. Even if you just change lanes the car body rolls crazy. The Jimny was very very complaint on the road. If you have a road trip I will definitely prefer a Jimny and not the Thar because the Jimny drives like a Hatchback. The suspension works well ON/OFF road.

Practicality

The Thar is the least practical car here as it has no boot, no Room for 4 and it’s a terrible ride experience. The Jimny on the other hand has a good boot, Good space for 4 and great mileage. Things will really change when the Thar 5 door version is launched. It will be curious on what all it will offer.

Features

The Thar is a very basic car with a basic Infotainment system. The Jimny has a more Sophisticated screen, Interior and everything. So features does go to the Jimny. It just more consumer friendly. Both cars have come a long was from the predecessors.

Final Verdict

The Jimny was a Hit and a miss for me as it is Overpriced for what it had earlier promised. It is not priced aggressively so I am not sure how well it is going to go against the Thar. It is promising but the Thar will Remain Thar. Im sure its sales will stay strong as they were earlier. If you want to have so decent off road capabilities with a good passenger comfort, Jimny is the one for you. If you want butch stance and only 2 people for the travel, Just stick to the Thar.
